Like hope. “First hope is brown,” according to author Christie Purifoy in her book, Seedtime and Harvest: How Gardens Grow Roots, Connection, Wholeness, and Hope. It is drooping sunflowers. Bird-pecked apples. Withered wildflowers. But then hope is green. Orange poppies on a desert hillside. Buds on an elderberry bush. Newborn fawns frolicking with their mothers. Kevin and I plan to return to see if the wild grapes ripen in time for harvest this fall. We will be back next year to look for elderberries, rose hips, and other edibles. Because, like the seeds, we have hope planted in the deepest parts of who we are. First hope is brown. But then it is green. “Cultivating a hopeful posture toward the future isn’t easy,” Purifoy writes. “Walking away is easy…. But hope? Hope is a choice. Hope is a muscle. Hope is an action. Hope is a seed.” Are you in a season of invisible work? Are you casting seeds for a future harvest? I pray in all your places of waiting for harvest that hope will plant a seed where your dreams long to be birthed. Or maybe you can plant a seed in someone else, who in the endless brown days of letting go, has forgotten the color of green. Let’s be the ones who carry and plant seeds!
