Jesus in Disguise

#7 in The Year of 100 Smiles I've been working on some valentine-themed blogs and hope to post one later this week, but right now my heart is full of Kevin's 101-year-old grandmother (Granny) who had a stroke on Sunday. We have been spending many hours at the hospital, sitting with her and making decisions about her care. Right now, she is sleeping most of the time, but we have had some sweet moments when she is conscious.

This is a piece I wrote a couple years ago about Granny.

Jesus in Disguise

At least twice a week I get to talk with Jesus. Personally. Face-to-face. Eye-to-eye. It's true.

Whenever I want to see Him all I need to do is climb into my car, drive a ½ mile down the road and go inside an apartment building on Pennington Drive. I sign in at the desk, walk down the hall and knock on door number 115.

"Come in," a feeble voice calls out.

As I enter the room, I see Jesus sitting in a worn, blue chair. His feet up on a stool. A blanket on His old legs. With white hair, wrinkled skin and cataract-covered eyes. I bend down and give Him a kiss.

"Hello kiddo. Thanks for coming to see me," he smiles.

Jesus says in Matt. 25:40 that whenever we do something for the weakest member of society, to the "least of these," we do it to Him. Somehow the poor, the forgotten, the old, the sick are really Jesus in disguise.

Tom Davis in Red Letters declares, "I've discovered a new way to live. Every morning when I get out of bed, I look for Jesus. No, not because I've misplaced Him. And I'm not talking about a feeling I get during prayer, or a revelation that comes to me while reading Scripture. I'm talking about finding Jesus in the eyes of real people."

How about you? Do you want to find Jesus? I guarantee that if you start looking, you will discover Him in the most unusual places. I found Him in the eyes of my 101-year-old grandmother. Where do you think you will find Him?

When you see him, be sure to smile.
