Riding a Big Wheel

Yesterday my husband and I rode our bikes on the sidewalk around a man-made lake near our home. In front of us, a young mother was enjoying the beautiful Arizona winter day while her young son rode on his Big Wheel beside her.

"Passing on the right," I said. The mother moved quickly to the side.

Not her son, however.

He peered over his shoulder, saw me, and immediately began speeding up.

Faster and faster he spun, his little legs a blur of movement on the pedals. When he realized he couldn't pedal fast enough he began zig-zagging his BiG Wheel, taking up the entire sidewalk.

He was determined to beat us. We had to jump off the sidewalk to pass him.

When I looked back, he was still pedaling furiously, while his mother jogged to keep up.

Someone had forgotten to tell that boy that he was too little. Too little to take on some adults on road bikes while riding a Big Wheel. Too short to pedal fast enough.

Too small to win a race when the odds were against him.

Feeling small today?

Not smart enough? Rich enough? Talented enough? Whatever enough?

Maybe it's time to get on a Big Wheel and take a ride.
