The Film, Nicky's Family: The Power of One

One of the decisions I made after the tragedy at Sandy Hook was to return to volunteering as a literacy advocate to a local elementary school.

Literacy advocate is a fancy word that means I read stories to kids. It's a small thing, one hour a week on my schedule, but sometimes in the face of evil, it is average people saying "yes" to simple things every day that makes a difference.

Average people. You. Me.’=

Because we who are the Image Bearers of God, are created to love with skin, to not sit on the sidelines and cheer on others, or to only send a check.

We must also send ourselves.

On January 12th at 7:00 pm, the Chandler Center of the Arts will be showing a film called Nicky's Family. This exceptional film is the story of one man, Nicholas Winton, who quietly organized the rescue of more than 600 Jewish children before the outbreak of WWII.

The critically acclaimed film has won 29 film awards, including 12 audience awards from U.S. film festivals.

Dozens of Winton's children have been found and to this day his family has grown to almost 6,000 people, many of whom have gone on to achieve great things. Amazingly enough, Winton is still alive at age 103.

This is part of an event, The Power of One, that will recognize volunteerism in our community. This will include a call to action as attendees have the opportunity to connect with community organizations during a pre-event fair.

If you are asking the question, "What can I do in the face of continual tragedies to make a difference?" - this event is for you. This is an opportunity as Image Bearers to make a positive difference in the lives of others - to love with skin -in our community.
