A Monday Reason to Celebrate
We had just finished our tour of the Sacred Valley. We had seen the impressive agricultural terraces of Pisaq,
the ceremonial fountains of Tambomachay,
the ancient crossroads of the Inca trail in Pupapukara,
and the 300 ton stone in Sacshahuaman, the Quechua name for "satisfied falcon," but it is known by everyone by the mnemonic "sexy woman."
Returning to Cusco, we passed a family walking along the side of the road, carrying some flowers and a religious statue.
"Peruvians love a parade," our guide explained. "No permits. Just gather some friends, add a banner and instruments, decorate a few cars if you have them, and head down the street."
Later we passed this group of boys preparing for an Independence Day celebration.
In a society rich in tradition and culture, where the average income is less than $500 a month, there is still reason to celebrate.
Today on this Monday-journey of faith,
a day of routine
and a long week ahead,
I pray you find reason to strike up the band,
wave your celebrity wave,
and smile for the cameras,
as you find reason,
albeit a small one,
for a parade.
