bare

removing twenty years of stains and spills and pet messes

until it is smooth concrete

cool under our feet.

We take a black sharpie

write words

permanent

on the foundation.

At first silliness and whimsy -

Love conquers all--right where his feet land every morning when he gets out of bed.

Sometimes we need to remember the words we stand on

especially on days

earthquaking days

a 7.9 on the Richter Scale

when the doctor says, "It's cancer"

and you want to wail,

“My dad already has cancer. Five friends have cancer. How can my mom have cancer too?"

and you never knew it was possible to hate so much

but you take out your hope and write it clear

bold

permanent

in your soul's foundation

and you know

even when you put down new flooring

it is there

for you to stand on.
