Swallowing a Waterfall
Have you ever tried to swallow a waterfall?
Water gets everywhere.
In your eyes.
Up your nose.
In your ears.
And no mater how much you drink, there is still more water flowing
and pounding
and beating
and splashing in all directions
until you find yourself
no longer consuming the waterfall
but being consumed by it.
It is a terrifying,
exhilarating,
wonderous experience.
In Ruthless Trust, Brennen Manning writes, "We are made for that which is too big for us. We are made for God, And nothing less will ever satisfy us."
We are made for that which is too big for us.
That thought, for me, made reading the entire book worth it.
We are made to swallow a waterfall. Even though logic says that is impossible, the inner wiring of our createdness demands we make the attempt,
but too often we settle for small sips of tepid water
that leave us
wanting,
parched,
thirsty.
We pursue what we can control.
But God invites us to live life
getting soaked
in the spray of a love
that overwhelms us,
a passion that swallows us,
a destiny that drenches us.
With mouths wide open,
we can drink deeply,
again and again.
